Club History
The Bowring Park golf course is located in the Huyton area of Merseyside .This pleasant parkland course offers a challenge to all levels of golfers. Whilst this is a fairly short course it is certainly not a hit and hope course. The set up follows the natural contours of the land to provide an undulating course and test for all golfers.
The Bowring family can be traced back to Benjamin Bowring who was a watchmaker living in the Exeter, who emigrated to Canada in the 1800’s,though he still kept a close connection with Liverpool through family and shipping between North America and Liverpool.

In January 1906 Sir William Benjamin Bowring the first elected Lord Mayor of Liverpool presented the Hall and its estate to the people of Liverpool .The land that was formerly known as Roby Hall Estate, which consisted of a mansion, 100 acres and cottages.
The land was donated for use as a leisure and recreational park. In May 1911 Liverpool City Council agreed to build a 9 hole golf course on the estate and that the cost would “not exceed £ 150 “ , the work took two years to complete and Bowring Park Municipal Golf Course was opened in 1913.It appears to have been 1st municipal golf course in England.
During the opening ceremony of the course, Sir William Benjamin Bowring founded “ Bowring Golf Club “ and presented the Presidents trophy that is still competed for to this day. The Former Prime Minister the Right Hon Harold Wilson was a member and president of the club until 1976.
The Club house was originally in Roby Hall until it was taken over for military use in the Second World War and then damaged by fire, and being too expensive to repair was demolished. The present club house has occupied the upper floor of the former stables since 1974.
The ownership of the course was transferred from Liverpool City Council to Knowsley Council in June 1997 and remains in the same ownership to this day.
